Mascara Showdown: Drugstore Vs. Premium Brand

Mascara is probably my #1 must have beauty item. Well, mascara and an eyelash curler because my lashes are stick straight. Why mascara? Because I look 1000000x more awake when my eyelashes are curled and coated. Plus, its the first product I ever used.

In my 16 years of wearing makeup, I can honestly say that I have never purchased a tube of premium brand mascara, and guess what? I get asked ALL the time what mascara i’m wearing! I just can’t justify spending $20++ on something that I’m supposed to get rid of after 3 months. Which, BTW I don’t usually do. I tend to keep mascara for around 5 months or until it dries out.

I was a Maybelline Full n’ Soft gal for years — until the consistency changed and it stopped working like it used to. I like my lashes to look FULL and LONG and all of a sudden my beloved Full n’ Soft wasn’t doing either. Ugh. There is seriously nothing worse than when your favorite product changes its formula and you find yourself on the hunt for its replacement. Well, I was on the prowl for about a year and I FINALLY found one that I love!

L’oreal Voluminous Lash Paradise!

This product is sooooo much better than Full n’ Soft ever was. I couldn’t believe I stayed loyal for so long!

It originally caught my eye because I noticed that it looks awfully similar to the most coveted mascara of the moment, Too Faced Better Than Sex.

What do I like about it? It does what every mascara should do… make lashes HUGE, it doesn’t smell weird, it has a brush wand that isn’t too big, and it washes off easily!

Well, like I mentioned, I have never bought a premium brand mascara, then I received a sample of Too Faced Better Than Sex… and let me tell you- the rumors are true. It’s good. Like, really really good.

So, I decided to do a side by side comparison and after trying both separately and at the same time, this is what I discovered:

  • Voluminous Lash paradise dries faster when you apply it, which means less opportunity to smudge and ruin your eye-shadow or foundation. Hello, time saver!
  • The consistency is basically the same.
  • The finished product looks almost identical- with Voluminous Lash Paradise winning.
  • They both rinse off easily with face wash.

There are many things that I WILL spend the extra $$ on. Foundation, primer, eye-shadow, blush, bronzer… etc etc. But mascara? Nope. Not me.

Oh, one more thing, They have 10 of the same ingredients.

*The only reason I would suggest spending more and opting for the Too Faced Better Than Sex is if you are vegan. Many of Too Faced products are Vegan- Friendly!

L’oreal Voluminous Lash Paradise for the win!

Thank you for the post! I have and still am a lover of full n soft but noticed the same thing you have. It’s different. I tried others but came back to full n soft. Now I’m eager to go look for L’Oréal voluminous lash paradise!

I can’t believe they changed the formula for Full N’ Soft, that mascara was a classic go-to for me back in the day. Between my Sephora Play and BirchBox subscriptions, I’m stocked on travel-sized mascaras at the moment but once those are done I’m definietly going to try Lash Paradise. LP looks more defined than BTS in your side by side comparison. Thanks for the review!

I’ve been using Maybelline Falsies for years but I just bought L’Oreal’s Voluminous off of your suggestion! Looking forward to trying it out!

Thanks for the side-by-side comparison of the mascaras…it is so crazy to think that there really is no difference and I’ve been wasting money on high-end mascaras all these years.
