Currently Freezing My Fat Off… with Coolsculpting

I’ve never had defined abs, or any muscle really. Even when I was at my skinniest and working out multiple times a week. My stomach always had rolls. Let’s just say I prefer a one-piece bathing suit (and a cover-up, hat, sunscreen and an umbrella). When Coolsculpting came out I knew it was something I had to try. I don’t want lipo (yet, maybe after kids…) but I wouldn’t mind getting rid of the areas with stubborn fat. As badly as I wanted Coolsculpting I kept telling myself I should really just exercise and eat less cheese. Well, fast forward 5 years and I still love cheese, and not working out. So when I was approached to be a model for Carmel Valley Plastic Surgery’s Coolsculpting event, of course, I jumped on that opportunity. Something you have probably noticed about me is that I have no shame. Sitting in a sports bra with a machine hooked up to my stomach fat for a group of strangers to watch just doesn’t phase me. Especially when I get to try a procedure I’ve always wanted.

Before I try any procedure I always do a ton of research. One common complaint I read was that Coolsculpting is SO painful and leaves you sore and bruised for weeks. That it feels like a mammogram on your fat and the massage at the end makes you want to die. LOL! Why would anyone do this to themselves? That was another reason I haven’t tried this yet…  I was terrified. Everyone at Dr. Karam’s office kept saying how it’s really not bad at all, and I’ll be fine, and no one has had any issues, but OF COURSE, they’re going to say that. I’m well aware that beauty can be painful (hello lip filler– I’m talking about you), but I clearly have no issues dealing with the pain for the end result.

Well, I’m just going to say it. IT’S NOT BAD. If you can wax your upper lip, Coolsculpting will feel like a walk in the park.

So what’s the process?

First, we took somewhat unflattering photos taken from six different angles. I always love the “before” pictures because 1. I always look so upset, the resting bitch face is in full effect and 2. That’s how you know how far you’ve come.

Then they drew on my stomach with Sharpie to map out where they will put the applicator (think Sorority hazing style- though I don’t think this is really a thing? Not in mine at least.. Any Alpha Chi Omega’s reading this?).

Next, they wiped my stomach with alcohol to prepare me for the sticky gel pad application.

The gel pad is important because it protects your skin from the cold, and keeps the applicator in place.

When they apply the applicator it cups your fat and starts to suction. Ok, so far this isn’t bad.

Then the cold comes. I was prepared for it to hurt. I kept waiting, but nothing. It felt more hot than cold- such a strange sensation. Then it goes numb.

35 minutes later they remove the applicator and massage the area for 2 minutes. The massage feels like when your foot is asleep and tingly. It doesn’t hurt but it definitely feels weird.

We did the same procedure to the other side and I was done!

Common Questions About Coolsculpting:

Why can’t you use one large applicator on the lower abdomen?

It won’t look natural. The center of the applicator is where you’ll see the biggest fat lossand people tend to have more fat towards the sides of their belly button. *If you are at a spa and they tell you one is ok… RUN! Yes, you may save money, but you will end up having to fix it later.

How many treatments will you need?

With each treatment, you will see 20-25% fat loss, not 100%. This is a marathon, not a sprint. Your results happen slowly over a few months. You may see results in as little as 3 weeks but it can take up to 6 months for your final results. Take pictures as you go!

What areas can you treat?

  • Upper and Lower abdomen (I want to do my upper abdomen next)
  • Love handles/ flanks
  • Bra/ back bulge
  • Arms (batwings)
  • Inner and outer thighs
  • That fun roll right under your butt
  • Double chin
  • Knees
  • Armpit Bulge
  • Man boobs

Where does the fat go?

Once the treated fat cells are crystallized (frozen), they die and are naturally processed and eliminated from the body. Once the treated fat cells are gone, they’re gone for good!

Do I need to follow a strict diet and exercise program before and after the treatment?

Coolsculpting is not a diet and exercise program, so you won’t need to change any of your lifestyle habits. You will probably feel more motivated to eat better and work out because you just paid a bunch of money to lose fat, and you like your new body.

I’ve read that some people have a hard recovery with lots of numbness, cramping, and swelling. Since I literally had this done today I can’t speak on that yet. But I will do a follow-up post in a few weeks. Stay tuned!

Have you ever tried Coolsculpting? Or any other fat reduction procedures? I’d love to hear about it in the comment section below!

  1. I just tried Coolsculpting because I tried so many diets before and none removed my fat. Coolsculpting is expensive, yet effective!

  2. I love what you said about the procedure feeling like more of a hot sensation. Undergoing a fat freezing procedure is a great idea if you want to slim down before swimsuit season. If I knew someone that could benefit from fat freezing services, I would make sure to refer them to a reliable medical center that is known for quality cosmetic procedures.
