ADULT ACNE – Tips from the Skincare Queen, Jan Marini

I am not-so-secretly obsessed with Jan Marini. Not only has she transformed my skin with her products, she told me I could call her whenever I wanted to chat… so I obviously took her up on that! I interviewed her about one of the most common questions I am asked: “how to treat adult acne”. Jan has an insane amount of knowledge about acne and so much of it is new to me. I thought I’ve heard it all but she really looks at acne differently than most everyone in the skincare world. So… Here’s what Jan has to say about ACNE.

Why Do We Get Acne?

Essentially, acne occurs because microscopic cells stick together in the follicle and trap oil and “P” acne bacteria. The bacteria is harmless, but, if trapped in the follicle, “P” acne bacteria feeds on the oil and excretes a very inflammatory fatty acid by-product that can cause the follicle walls to leak or rupture, which then results in an acne lesion on the surface of the skin.

Is Hormonal Acne Different Than Regular Acne?

Acne is an epidemic among adult females in the 20’s, 30’s, 40’s and beyond (that’s discouraging, right??). Female adult acne has some unique issues. It is estimated that as much as 95% of this group has a testosterone sensitivity or produces some free testosterone. When testosterone meets up with normal enzymes in the follicle, the result is Dihydrotestosterone, which is the most aggressive form of testosterone. The result is persistent acne breakouts on the chin and jawline that plague many adult females.

How Do You Clear Acne?

One is to use a topical that can get into the follicle and keep the cells from sticking together. Bioclear is a combination of Glycolic, Salicylic, and Azelaic acid and can dramatically assist in clearing the appearance of acne. The acids in Bioclear work to dissolve and dislodge the glue-like substance or “cellular cement” that cause cells to stick together. Bioclear is also remarkable as a resurfacing product for any skin type because it works on the surface of the skin, making pores look smaller and facial skin noticeably smoother and re-texturized.

Secondly, it is critical to diminish the “P” acne bacteria count and keep the bacteria at a minimum so the bacteria doesn’t feed on the oil and excrete an inflammatory fatty acid by-product that causes the follicle to rupture, resulting in an acne lesion.

Finally, anti-inflammatory topicals are important because acne is categorized as an inflammatory disease. Duality is formulated with a number of anti-inflammatories and ingredients that assists in resolving the appearance of leftover discoloration.  With that said, all Jan Marini Skin Research products have anti-inflammatories and antioxidants.  For example, Glycolic Acid is a very powerful anti-inflammatory agent.

Benzoyl Peroxide is so effective because benzoyl forces peroxide into the follicle, where it releases oxygen. This kills the “P” Acne Bacteria because it cannot survive in the presence of oxygen. Benzoyl Peroxide has been shown to clear acne better than virtually any other topical medication.  But, Benzoyl Peroxide has the perception that it can cause considerable drying.  The Benzoyl Peroxide in Duality is a true game changer.  It is a newer form of Benzoyl Peroxide.  The molecules are much smaller.  It penetrates far faster and provides results more rapidly.  One of the biggest advantages is that it doesn’t dry the skin.  It was tested by Jaggi Rao, MD, Dermatologist,  in the winter, in temperatures that reached 120 degrees below zero.  Everyone that participated in the study was actually more hydrated after the study than before! When this exceptional form of Benzoyl Peroxide is combined with Retinol, we are able to achieve outstanding acne clearing and de-age the appearance of skin simultaneously.

Why Are Jan Marini Products So Great for People with Adult Acne?

Interestingly, many of the same topicals that resurface the skin and make it look younger, smoother, more refined and glowing are the same ingredients that help to keep cells from sticking together in the follicle. Individuals don’t have to choose between addressing acne or targeting sun damaged and aging skin. Jan Marini products are designed to address a multitude of common skin concerns, at the same time, and, have the endorsement from physicians around the world.

Is There Any Real Cure for Acne?

There is no “cure” for acne. Prescriptions such as Accutane can put the patient into “remission”- sometimes this lasts for months or years, but there are huge numbers of individuals whose acne returns. You probably know someone who has been on Accutane more than once. The good news is that when using the right products diligently, individuals can experience complete and total clearing, as long as they are consistent with everyday usage.

Many Brands Claim to Help with Acne – What Makes Your Products Stand Out?

Jan Marini Skin Research is endorsed by physicians the world over. Our technologies are proven and are backed by independent medical studies. We have also had five studies published in a peer-reviewed medical journal. And, we have been given more awards from the acclaimed “New Beauty” Magazine than any other skin care company. This includes the award, “Best Skin Care System Sold in a Doctor’s Office”, for 8 consecutive years.

What About Pregnancy and Acne? Any Tips?

Most of the topical acids (Glycolic, Salicylic and Azelaic acid) are generally considered safe during pregnancy and nursing, as is Benzoyl Peroxide. But, my rule is that everything should be run by the OBGYN for approval.

Whew, that was a lot of info but isn’t Jan amazing?! I hope you learned something new and found some products that can help with your acne!

BTW, Jan has an amazing youtube channel where she shares SO MUCH INFORMATION and does skin consultations on real people! You have to check it out!

xx,

Love Lauren
